Day 188-Free Days-What Did I Learn?

Good morning everyone, and may I just say, I hope you all have a fabulous Superbowl Sunday if for no other reason than you got to spend time with friends and family, cause, like me, you don’t really have a stake in the game or care who wins or not-it’s all about the joy of breaking bread and hanging out with your loved ones…and the commercials of course!

Speaking of commercials, that brings me to what I found out when I did some research into which would be a better course for me to take, and there were two I was interested in. Working with Brands or Affiliate Marketing Course.

After watching the introduction video that Jenny Melrose did on Utube for her course of working with brands, I learned that the course would teach me everything from how to pitch to a brand to how to create the perfect proposal piece, how she makes up to and even beyond 10k per month by working with brands and how you can too, how to invoice and follow up, and how to stay true to your voice and let your personality win over the brand and keep them wanting to work with you for months at a time-not just a one-and-done kind of thing. Her course costs anywhere from $397 for the Basic class to $597 for the Master class. Wow! While that doesn’t seem like much to end up earning over 10k a month, I would completely have to restructure and plan in advance my entire blog…not sure that’s the route I want to go.

The second course I looked at, was Michelle Gardner’s e-course on Affiliate Marketing (How to build  six figure income without millions of visitors or selling your soul)  which earns her around  100k a month, and how she went from $0 to 50k per month and how you can too, even if you are a beginner blogger. Testimonials from students talked about how their income quadrupled in the first month after taking her course-which in total cost $197! Even if I had to create a separate blog to achieve this goal, it would be well worth the investment. However, I would not know if that’s what I need to do until I take the course, which is, by the way, at your own pace and waaaay more affordable for this girl to take. She runs an award winning blog called Making Sense of Cents which earns her around 70k per month, 50k of that being through affiliate marketing.

So the bottom line is, I have a lot to think about and sort through, but I think it’s a no-brainer. Even if I only worked on the course an hour a day, it would take me about a month to get through it, and then I can apply the lessons I learned to this blog, or create another-I’ll figure that out as I go along. Yes, to make money you have to invest some money, and yes, it will take some work, but I’m willing to do it. And I want to take you all along, if you’re interested. Maybe I could do a post each Saturday (since that’s a free day) on what I learned that week and you could apply it to your blog and then we could all learn how to make extra money! Who couldn’t use some extra money? And since my goal is to help people with my blog, it sounds like a win-win to me. What say you?

I’ll let you know when I start the course, and we will be off and running after that. I’m excited to learn something new and profitable…but will continue with my blog as it is for now, and speaking of that, heres the run down for this week coming up.

Motivational Monday as usual will feature a quote or scripture- this week it will be a quote I found on Pinterest.

This is my essay Tuesday will be about how I worked in a nursing home, starting from when I was 16.

Wednesday’s Medical Minute is still a mystery, unless someone wants to chime in and provide me with a subject they want me to address.

Throwback Thursday will be on another photo I cull from the archives (or that shoebox full of pictures I keep in the office)

Flash Fiction Friday is the usual surprise, even to myself, lol. Last week I did it off a word prompt, this week I might try a picture prompt…who knows?

I hope to see everyone back here tomorrow, enjoy the big game, family and friends and I hope the commercials this year are worth all the millions they spend on them. Have a blessed day. 🙂

Day 187-Free Days-What Makes Me Happy

img_0757After surveying what needs to be purchased from the grocery whenever we decide to get out later, I realized, it doesn’t take much to make me happy or feel “rich” these days. Once I read back the story I wrote yesterday, I thought about it even more. If I had a genie grant me a wish or two, I really wouldn’t know what to ask for. As long as I have a few products in the bathroom to “maintain” myself, some food to eat and my devices to keep me connected to the outside world, I’m good!

Of course, I’m talking material things here, not friends and family, we all need that to make us happy.

I mean, certain products I depend on, specific grocery items like Kerrygold butter-I use a LOT of that, along with pure, unrefined coconut oil. Stevia (the good, pure kind) and vanilla extract, (the real stuff, not that imitation crap) and Ceylon cinnamon, (not that sawdust they sell in the grocery store). I started thinking, maybe it’s time I learn how to have a relationship with the folks who make these products I use so much and see if we can’t scratch each other’s backs. I don’t know much about product marketing, but I aim to learn. I use all of the above products to make my bulletproof coffee every single morning. Shouldn’t I get a little kickback for mentioning their products in my blog?

Anyway, I’m just thinking out loud here, what do you think? How do you all feel about product marketing and do you work with companies to help sponsor their products? Do you get paid a little something when you do? I’m just curious, since I can’t have ads on my site, how to possibly make a little money on the side by working with brands and plan on taking the workshop that Addi Ganley is co-hosting. I missed the actual workshop but can access the replay, so that’s what I plan on doing sometime this weekend.

I’ll let you know how it goes and if you have comments or suggestions, leave em for me! Have a wonderful day everyone and I’ll see you tomorrow on the patio!

Day 186-Flash Fiction Friday-Writing Room

Sandra, a writer, was strolling through the antique shop one day, when her eyes landed on an odd looking lamp. She picked it up and turned it over in her hands, thinking to herself that it looked a lot like that magical lamp in Aladdin. But that’s just silly, she told herself and placed it back on the table. As she turned to leave, she noticed out of the corner of her eye a small tendril of smoke had emitted from the end of the lamp. With eyes wide and an incredulous stare, she stood there as the tendril became a form in the shape of a man, just like in the movie!

“Well, don’t just stand there with your mouth hanging open” the genie said, “I’m here to grant you three wishes, you’d better make them good, cause I’ll be headed back in the lamp for another one hundred years when you’re done.” Sandra stood stammering, disbelieving her eyes and ears, yet she started thinking of what she really desired quickly, before he could disappear. The genie seemed to float right in front of her, patiently waiting with his arms crossed while she struggled to come to a decision. Before she could say a word, he reached up and thoughtfully tugged on one of his earrings, and suggested to her that the time was running short. “Ok, ok, I’ve got it,” Sandra sputtered, ” I want a new writing room! One with a large desk, window to look out of and the most comfortable chair I ever sat in!”

The genie considered this for a moment and said, “That’s easy. Consider it done, your wish is my command. Next?” Sandra had not thought that far ahead, yet being a caring soul, she decided to make a wish for her husband and asked, “Would it be too much to give my husband a million dollars, so he can retire and never have to work again?” “Absolutely, the genie said, your wish is my command. One more.” Sweating now, Sandra struggled for something else to wish for, she had never been given this type of power and she didn’t want to waste it. On top of that, she was a simple person and never lived beyond her means-it was hard for her to come up with something she wanted on the spot like that. Finally an idea came to her and she said, “I’d love for there to be no sickness in the world and no war either.”

“Who do you think I am, God?” the genie asked with his hands on his imaginary hips, “You had better just write a good story in that fabulous new room of yours where you imagine that perfect world, I’m just a simple genie and can’t make that kind of thing happen.” And with that, he disappeared back into the lamp, gone again for another hundred years. Sandra could not believe what just happened and thought to herself, “Well that was just rude! At least he granted me a new writing room and the joy of having my husband home with me all the time. Maybe the genie is right, I’ll write a story about how we can achieve world peace and when it becomes a best seller, I’ll take the royalties and donate them to science so they can find a cure for all illnesses. She sure was idyllic, this Sandra.

When she returned home, she say the genie had indeed granted her wishes, the writing room was everything she could have dreamed of and more, painted in her favorite colors of the ocean, with floor to ceiling bookshelves, a huge desk in an L shape, so she and her husband could both use it, a glorious window, perfect for viewing the neighborhood, and the most comfortable chairs she ever sat in. As she stood there marveling, her husband walked in and said, “You are never gonna believe what happened today!” Sandra just looked at him and with a wink she said, “Wanna bet?”

Day 184-Wed Med Min-Why Sitting is the New Smoking

I know for me, sitting is starting to become a problem-whether the reason is that I do it too much, or that my couch is causing me pain. The more I read on the subject, the more reasons I find that point to the fact that sitting too much can be detrimental to our overall health, causing increased instances of certain diseases, the wasting of our leg, hip and back muscles and increasing our chances for diminished mental health. Let’s explore why it’s so bad and then what we can do about it.

Sitting can lead to depression
Sitting can lead to depression

According to one article I read on the Better Health Channel, if you sit for extended periods of time, your leg and gluteal muscles will atrophy, your hip flexor muscles will shorten, and the discs in your spine will compress-due to the bad posture we exhibit while sitting in the wrong position for hours on end. I can tell some of these things (or maybe all) are happening to me by the way my back hurts in the morning, my hips ache when I try to do my morning stretches and sometimes, after rising, my legs feel like they may give out from under me when I start to walk! This is not good!!

Sitting too long also increases chances of getting varicose veins, DVT (deep vein thrombosis) heart disease and diabetes, as well as certain types of cancer. Some studies suggest that people who sit more than others have a 147% chance of suffering a heart attack or stroke.

Another symptom I have and have previously talked about is the stiff shoulders and neck muscles from sitting hunched over a computer screen. This is why I tried the text talking, however, I still found myself sitting and leaning over to be heard. I have to find another way. The answer is of course-standing.

The body was built to stand on two legs, upright, so that our internal organs function properly. If you find yourself sitting too much during the day, there is still time to turn things around and gain more mobility and a better chance of remaining healthy. Find ways to move around more, like walking from the back of the parking lot at the grocery store. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, don’t sit for hours on end without several breaks to get up and move around.

Talk to your doctor before starting an exercise regimen if you are new to activity, don’t let bad weather stop you from moving, you can still do body weight exercises like sit-ups and lunges, squats and side bends, or go to the local mall and just walk around. I need to take this advice myself, even taking the dogs for a short walk a day can help myself and them too. Whiskey is getting a little chubba wubba 🙂

Around the house we can all do things like making several trips to put up all the laundry, dust more frequently, set a limit on tv watching-or watch while standing up and performing kitchen duties. Walk and talk on the phone, listen to books rather than sit and read, while gardening or on a walk, do your ironing while watching your favorite shows. I for one, need to incorporate more exercise in my day, by first doing a better stretching routine and maybe some weight lifting, along with longer walks and less tv time at night. I also need to get a new couch!!

What ways can you think of to sit less and move more? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Us writers have to stick together and help each other out. You know we sit too much, in general, and usually it’s also in the wrong position, or with bad posture in general. I sit on a chair with my legs crossed over each other while typing on the computer. This is because my office is not set up properly, and I am not using a typical writing desk, nor am I sitting in my chair the right way, but rather, sitting on the edge of it. When we can afford it, I have been contemplating getting one of those new standing desks and trying that out. How do you sit, and do you get up and move after a certain time goes by?

I can’t afford to get some disease, have a heart attack or lose the use of my legs, can you? Let’s nip this in the bud and come up with useful ways to incorporate more movement in our days. Excuse me, but I’m off to get a leg up on dinner by putting a chicken in the crock pot-see you all tomorrow for Flashback Thursday…now get up and take a break!
