Day 300-Wednesday's Medical Minute-7 Benefits of Grapefruit Essential Oil

Alright, only 65 days to go before my year of daily blogging is up! You guys sick of me yet? lol! I have to say, it’s been fun, but it will be nice to take step back and have a little breather for a while. Maybe go to three days a week or something. ūüôā

Today I thought I’d get into a discussion about my latest favorite essential oil: grapefruit

It has so many uses and benefits and smells so wonderful, I can’t believe it’s taken so long for me to write about it. I have actually been using it for a while, it was in a blend that I used to use to maintain my weight (one of the many benefits), but now I use it alone or combined with lemon in my water every day.

If you have been hiding under a rock for the last few years, you may be unaware that grapefruit is one of the best foods to eat for weight loss and burning fat. Many folks jus don’t like grapefruit because it is bitter, or they can’t eat it because it reacts with their medications. Well, grapefruit essential oil is the answer! Of course, you should check with your doctor if you take certain medications for depression¬†or blood pressure but it is considered safe.

Whether you choose to use it internally like me (only 100% organic ctpg brands please) or in a massage oil concoction, you will do your body a favor by adding this to your routine. Some studies show that even inhaling the aroma of this potent essential oil can naturally lower your blood pressure and help you relax! If using internally, only use the recommended amount (usually one drop per 16oz glass of liquid) because overconsumption can lead to gallstones and cause spasms. Also, if using topically, be sure to mix it with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut or jojoba oil if you have sensitive skin.

Some of grapefruit oil’s benefits are:

  • Disinfecting surfaces
  • Cleansing your body
  • Reducing depression
  • Stimulating your immune system
  • Decreasing fluid retention
  • Curbing sugar cravings
  • Aiding in weight loss

Grapefruit oil contains many antioxidants and phytochemicals which reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.  Limonene, which makes up between 88-95% of the oil is a tumor-fighting, cancer preventative phytochemical that protects cells from damage. It is just one of its several antioxidants including vitamin C, myrcene, terpinene, pinene, and citronellol.

Some of the many uses of grapefruit essential oil are as follows:

Natural Antibacterial-Because of its antimicrobial effects, grapefruit oil can kill bacteria internally or on the skin, prevent the growth of mold and fight strong bacterial strains responsible for food-born illnesses like salmonella and E-coli.

Air Freshener-Getting rid of odors can be accomplished by diffusing a blend of grapefruit, lemon, and orange essential oils, which clean and deodorize the air.

Weight Loss Booster-Some of grapefruit oil’s active ingredients are beneficial to boost metabolism, reduce hunger cravings and appetite. This makes it a great tool for losing weight in a fast and healthy way. Diffused around the home or office, it can help curb those cravings when they strike. If you can, add a drop to your water and sip throughout the day or rub a drop on your wrist to drive hunger pangs away. Direct Inhalation of the oil can kick sugar cravings as well.¬†

Digestive Booster-Grapefruit oil can help detox the liver and kidneys, help with fluid retention and fight gut bacteria. Combined with lemon essential oil, it can help flush toxins out of your system and may even help cure a hangover by stimulating the gallbladder and liver.

Helps Clean Hair, Fight Acne and Save Skin-Not only is grapefruit a great cellulite fighter, its antibacterial properties make it great for cleansing skin, and strengthening immunity against pollutants. It can help heal wounds, cuts, bits and prevent skin infections. Adding a few drops to your shampoo can reduce grease and sweat while adding volume and shine.

So you see, it is a very versatile oil and I’m only using it for half of it’s benefits myself! I like the fresh citrusy taste it gives beverages and when added to the diffuser, it makes the whole room smell fresh and clean. Now, I am not a certified aromatherapist, and you should always check with your healthcare provider before trying anything new. I learned what I know through my own research and trusted sources like Dr Axe, Dr Mercola and Roxy over at The Oily Guru. I don’t get anything to talk about them, nor am I currently affilitated with any particular brand. Maybe that will change in the future, but for now I use a brand that I can get locally that is ctpg (certified theraputic pure grade) ¬†and it has been working fine for me.

Give grapefruit essential oil a try and let me know what you think. If you have a question or comment, leave it below and I’ll try to address it to the best of my ability. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you tomorrow, on the patio.

Day 299-MET-Why I Decided To Become A Writer

The summer after my mom passed away, we were on vacation in Crystal Beach, Tx. and as I lounged on the sun deck catching up on emails and such, ¬†I came across one of those ads for “Become a barefoot writer.” I have to admit, I was intrigued and maybe part of me was looking for something different to do with my life. When you experience loss, you sometimes need something to fill that hole, for me that was writing. At first, after reading that article and several others, it was all about how to make money as a writer. All the content I was reading had to do with becoming a copywriter and how I could make a good living as a writer, from anywhere in the world, as long as I had a computer and an internet connection, in my pajamas if I wanted! Well, who doesn’t want that dream? Anyway, since then my focus has changed and while I’d still like to make money, I realized that I can’t do that without providing a service to others at the same time. You have to give your readers something of value. Something they want or need. Help them solve a problem, fix what’s broken or offer some product or service designed to assist them some way.

Thing is, somewhere¬†along the way I discovered that I love to write. Also, that I’m addicted to learning. I take more classes and read more material than I get words written. I’m struggling with my blog and website, but I keep trying and keep writing content and someday, maybe I’ll figure out how it all comes together. I’ve taken classes on copywriting, essay writing, marketing, social media, blogging and affiliate marketing. You would think that by now, something would have clicked and I would have it all put together and working like a well-oiled machine. Not. But I will get there if I keep my focus true and never give up on my dream. So far, I’ve written one article that paid me some money. Maybe I need to get back to that, write some how-to articles or step-by-step tutorials and submit them to some publications that pay. That way, I get compensated for providing something people may want or need.

But the other dream is creative writing and I can’t seem to get away from that. I want to someday write a book. I mean the kind with a plot and characters and a beginning, middle and end. That’s why my blog is such a confusing mess right now¬†because I can’t make up my mind exactly what kind of writer I want to be…still. I’ve been at it almost three years now, playing around on other publications like Medium¬†and Prose because I think I can do it all and really, I can’t. Or I shouldn’t. I should pick one thing and run with it, I just have to do some soul searching and decide which one resonates with me the most. Follow your heart they say. But what if my heart wants it all? I’m like a spoiled brat or petulant child, I want it all and I want it now!¬†Well, I will make this promise to you, I will figure it out. If I keep writing and studying, someday it will all click and I will devise a way to write what you need to read, ¬†you will either learn something, get the¬†advice you need, be entertained, or be helped in some other way and maybe I will earn a little something. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Then again, maybe I will finally write a novel and it will become a best seller…talk about a dream!

I still need your thoughts, suggestions, and feedback. You have to tell me what you want and/or need. Do you want me to keep the blog going just as it is, or do you want to see some changes? Do you like articles, recipes, tutorials or reviews? What subjects do you want me to write about? Writing, alternative health, Paleo/Whole30 or something completely different? ¬†These are the things I need from you, then I will be able to better design my blog to help you. Thanks for reading and following along, have a good day and I’ll be waiting for your responses on the patio.

Day 298-Happy Memorial Day

Arlington Memorial Cemetary

Today we remember all of those who served and gave their lives for our country. Although I too served, it feels fraudulent to include myself in this group because I served during peace time. Four and a half years, is nothing compared to the sacrifices that have been made by not only members of my family but of so many others. Take time out from your barbecues and other festivities today to think about them and say a prayer for the fallen.

I apologize for missing posting yesterday. I had an all day concert and by the time I got home it was way too late, not to mention, I was in no shape to write.ūüėČ

The concert was BFD 2017 and featured such bands as Skillet, Pretty Recklace, 3 Days Grace, Papa Roach, Stone Sour and more. We were lucky to have seats as things got pretty wild out on the lawn.  Will try to post some videos, it was a great show, especially when Pretty Recklace did a tribute to Chris Cornell. All of the bands gave shout outs to the veterans watching too.

Getting ready for Skillet
Pretty Recklace

Well, shoot. It won’t let me post my videos. I’m not sure how to remedy that problem, but if you really want to see, they are on my personal Facebook page under Kimberly S. Smyth.

Day 297-Free Days-Watering Schedule

So we are at the unofficial start of summer and today’s “feel-like” temperature was 100+ and luckily, Saturday is our day to water. I could literally see the plants with their tongues hanging out, even though I water with a can in between our allowed days for watering.

Grass getting a much needed sip

We are in an area that only allows watering with sprinklers two days a week to conserve water. It’s supposed to keep demand for water at an even keel, but not many people adhere to the rules. Anyway, after running errands but not getting much accomplished today, I was determined to at least repot a couple of plants and get them watered. Then I noticed the plants in the front yard looking pretty parched, and I just put them in the ground a week ago-I don’t want to lose them. So, I had Dave run the sprinklers since it was “our” day, and besides, no one trusts the weatherman in Texas at this time of the year! ūüėČ

Day 296-Flash Fiction Friday-Mayfest Madness

It was a Friday in Ft Worth, Texas, home of Mayfest and as usual, the weather was geared up to ruin things with the threat of storms. All the vendors lined the streets, food vendors like Polish sausage on a stick, and the best funnel cake you ever ate, were scrambling to get cover set up in case the winds and hail came to crash the party. Katie and her friend Becca were roaming the streets and taking in the sights oblivious to the unpredictable, ever-changing skies above them.

Katie had always wanted to go to Mayfest, this was the first year her parents allowed it¬†since she just turned 15 and Becca was already 16 and able to drive. Becca was a trustworthy girl, her parents gave her lots of freedom because of that. Still, being silly girls with fun on their mind, they were unaware of the possible consequences of braving the spring festival. Becca got permission to drive her dad’s truck to the Trinity Park and off they went.

Becca had two things on her mind actually, boys held the number one spot and coming up a close second was riding the Ferris wheel…but only if said boy was involved, of course. She had many a daydream about being caught at the top of the Ferris wheel with her dream date. So, naturally, she had the eagle eye¬†out for Justin, her current crush. Katie could not understand what Becca saw in that cowboy but hey, she figured to each his own, right? As far as Katie was concerned, Mayfest was the best opportunity for everything artsy and festival food. All she wanted was to go down the food vendor aisle, sampling everything she had room for and top it all off with a delicious funnel cake. Her idea of heaven. Then, she wanted to go check out the latest paintings, jewelry, and whatever live show she could see.

As the girls made their way down the food vendor alley, the wind had started to pick up and the sky had darkened a bit, of course, they were too preoccupied with the latest hot thing¬†on the menu…curly potato chips! Yummy¬†goodness was what they were. The girls had just grabbed one to share and were looking for a place that sold slurpy type beverages when all of a sudden a gust of with snatched the chips right out of Katie’s hand, sending them flying straight out in front of her to land in a sickening splat on the ground. She thought she might cry but then Becca patted her on the back and said, “Don’t worry about it, I’ll get us another.” So as Becca went to do that Katie rounded up the drinks and met her under an umbrella table. That only lasted a minute as well, the wind lashed out again and the umbrella folded down, scaring the girls and making them scramble for safety.

Katie might have been the snacker of the two, but she was also the brighter. She could see what was happening and told Becca they may need to get out of there and try again the next day, the weather was starting to look bad. Becca told her not to be a worry wart, they had rides to ride and she secretly hoped she’d get to see Justin but she didn’t say that to Katie. Thoughtfully munching on a curly chip Katie said, “You know, it could hail and that might wreck your dad’s truck.” “Oh, you’re just being paranoid. That’s not gonna happen.” Becca retorted, “Besides, Dad’s got insurance.” Katie said, “Ok, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Just then, a clap of thunder sounded so loud, Katie dropped the chips again ducking and covering her ears. “Obviously, I wasn’t meant to have those chips!” she cried. Becca grabbed her hand and steered her in the direction of the midway.

Meanwhile, Justin was with his buddy Henry, checking out the car show that Mayfest put on every year. He was here to do guy things and thoughts of girls were there too, just kind of on the back burner. That all changed when, as he was approaching a vintage Corvette, he saw Becca out of the corner of his eye, dragging Katie toward the midway. Oh my goodness, he thought, she is so beautiful. Breaking away from Henry with a holler of, “I’ll be right back”, he turned to catch up with the girls and possibly set up a rendezvous later. “Yo! Becca!” he called and hearing her name, Becca turned in her tracks and then planted her feet. “Hey Justin,” she shyly said, twirling her long brown hair with her finger and biting her lip. “When did you get here?” He answered back, “Oh, I been here with Henry over at the car show for about twenty minutes. Say, you girls headed for the rides?” He knew this was his chance to get on that Ferris wheel with Becca and he wasn’t going to miss it.

The plan was made for all four of them to meet back at the wheel in thirty minutes and the girls went on to the art show to stall for time. Katie was so excited to see what was new because she was such a fan of painting herself. Nothing brought her more peace than creating a beautiful piece from a blank canvas. Making their way past one booth after another, the sprinkles started to become heavier and then Katie could have sworn she felt something icy hit her bare shoulder. “Uh, Becca…” she had just enough time to utter when the clouds opened up and the rains poured down, mixed with pea-sized ice pellets. Squealing, Becca grabbed Katie’s hand and headed for her dad’s truck. “What about Justin and Henry?” Katie called out. “I’ll text em later, we gotta get out of here!” Becca hollered through the howling wind. The hail was now the size of ping-pong balls and it hurt.

Luckily Justin caught the girls running to the truck and fell in line with them. “Hey, can we hitch a ride?” he asked Becca as they sloshed through the ever-growing puddles of water. “Yeah, just move your buns!” she said and all four of them hightailed it through the parking lot to the waiting vehicle. Safely inside the vehicle, Becca looked over at Justin and asked, “How did you guys get here anyway?” to which Justin replied, “We asked to be dropped off by Henry’s folks, they were going to dinner and then they would have picked us up, if we hadn’t found a ride by then.” ¬†“Well aren’t yall the lucky ones?” Katie smirked and they laughed as Becca carefully made her way out of the park, trying to avoid getting hit as panicked visitors raced out ahead of her. Becca secretly thought she was the lucky one, in more ways than one.

Day 295-Throwback Thursday-Here's The Promised Pics

Good morning everyone and how are you today? Remember the post I did on how we took our kids to New Orleans one year and there were some pictures of a freaky show they watched in Jackson Square that I could not find? Well, yesterday, as I was tearing up my house looking for my passport, I found those pictures!!

So, real quick, I’m going to lay them out, starting with a shot of the boys and me together and then unfold the story in pictures of how the freaky guy went from no chains, to completely bound, to free again. That’s how he must get his drug money for the day….just sayin, by the looks of him and his helpers. I could be completely wrong. (This was many years ago also, remember) Enjoy and have a great day everyone!

Click on the pic to enlarge it, and sorry, I did not get a pic of him once he was free, but believe me, he got out of those chains and locks-I thought he might die in the process, but he didn’t. It was scary, look at the last picture at the back of my boy’s heads, the were rapt by his performance! Good grief! Are we model parents or what? Anyway, I guess that’s just part of New Orleans culture, luckily we made up for it by showing them the fine food and other attractions New Orleans has to offer. ūüėČ

Day 294-WMM-Do Your Knees Do This?

The first time it happened to me, I was 13 years old. We had been playing baseball with our next door neighbors in the alley behind our house. I was having the best run of my life, had almost made it to first base when…in mid-air mind you, my kneecap seemed to slip to the left of where it was supposed to be, which is called dislocation, and I brought out all the neighbors with my screams. They thought I was being murdered, but that was the worst pain I have ever felt, to this day, I still have anxiety attacks if I think about the pain I feel every time that happens. Unfortunately for me, it happened a lot.

Not my knee, but I had many that looked just like this

My Dad took me to the doctor who was an excellent physician with no bedside manner at all. He looked at my leg as I lay writhing in pain and said, “You dislocated¬†your knee, you knew that didn’t you?” I was so angry, what did he mean ‘I knew that’? Turns out that was just his way of joking around, but this was no laughing matter. My knee had swelled to the size of a grapefruit and he had to first drain off all that fluid before he stabilized, then cast my leg. (that’s how they did it in the old days) This was after trying to walk on it FOR A WEEK after the injury. My parents didn’t know any better, it was only because I was not improving that they took me in. When I came home from the doctor in a cast and on crutches, my mother burst into tears.

I guess God made me a little crooked, one leg is a few centimeters shorter than the other or something- that is what the next doctor I had to go to told us. He also said I already had arthritis in my knees, a fact I chose to ignore all my life. I was young. I couldn’t let that stop me from walking, marching, and dancing! I had things to do! Anyway, for whatever reason, my knees (both of them) would dislocate from time to time, the left one way more than the right. They say it is more common in women. They also say it occurs when the leg is planted wrong, that causes the patella to slide out of place. well, the first time it happened to me I was in mid air! The cause for my left knee anyway was the fact that the tendon was pulling too tight, causing¬†my kneecap to go out if I even turned my leg the wrong way. Once it happened after I was married, I finally had the mini-surgery to correct it. They did a lateral tendon release and (knock on wood) I never dislocated it again.

So why am I now having trouble with my right knee? Apparently, it had more arthritis in it, all of the injuries wore down the cartilage and now I have not much cushion left and I’m hoping they can do those injections that make your cartilage grow back. I hate having surgery¬†because then there are months of physical therapy blah, blah, blah. I still have things to do, you know, it’s just never a good time. Thing is, I didn’t have as many dislocations in that one, so why is it now so messed up?

When I was young I called it twisting my knee, because, really that is what’s happening, but the correct term is subluxation or dislocation. If you talk to most healthcare professionals, they say it is more common in kids who play sports and that the normal age for this to occur is between 16-20. After it happened to me that first time, I didn’t need to be playing sports, I could get up out of a chair wrong and BOOM! That happened once, and it was horrific¬†because the kneecap locked to the side, I couldn’t get it back in position and whoever came to my rescue managed it and then I passed out from the pain. I just read that patellar subluxation is more common than dislocation and just as disabling…no kidding? Welcome to my life. They call it that because it is caused by a physical deformity of the knee, causing the knee to buckle and no longer support your weight. (And all the other symptoms I’ve already discussed here) Treatment usually in multimodal, involving education, physical therapy, braces, weight reduction and medication. If you need to lose weight, they make you do that first too, because every pound you gain puts and extra 3 pounds of pressure on your knees. That is not my issue though and never has been.

What I’m wishing now is that I would have had the real deal surgery when I was younger, now I don’t want to have to go through it. I have an appointment scheduled for June 12 with a new ortho doc, I’m hoping he agrees that I can wait awhile. Has this happened to any of you? What did they do for it? Have you had knee surgery? I want to hear all about it, just tell me in the comments. Sorry if I made any of you squirm, just talking about this had me squirming as I wrote it. I’m telling you, I’d rather have a baby than go through that pain again! Anyway, I’ll be here with my brace on and only one more day of steroids left, yea!! Write me back so I can hear your answers, and I’ll be resting on the patio.

Day 293-MET-That Time I Got Poop On My Face

It was one of those vacations we as a family wait for all year long. Our annual pilgrimage to Port Aransas, when the kids were still young enough to be enchanted by Mother Nature and Dave and I wanted to show them how great being at the ocean was. We were broke that year, but determined to take a break from work and show the kids a good time. We ended up getting a no frills, lower end condo that year (still a condo though, no hotel for us!) and it was tight, but cozy.

Dave and I were still young enough to want a little romance and would steal a few moments when the kids were otherwise occupied. It was following one of these trysts, we were hanging out in the parking lot, trying to decide what to do for lunch and the kids had been snacking on some cheese-its. The next thing I knew, there were seagulls encircling our heads, it was all fun and games watching Josh throw crackers to the hovering birds, Chris cracking up as they snatched them right out of the sky. This was new to them and they were having a blast…right up until the moment one of those damn gulls pooped and it landed right on my cheek!

A flock of seagulls

At first no one could speak. The boys, Dave included, all just stared at me, open mouthed as shocked as I was. Then, as I realized what I had running down my face, I started to cry just as they started to laugh at me. Let me tell you, I did not find the humor. As soon as they saw me crying, they quickly shut up and came over to console me. I couldn’t figure out how it happened, I was sitting on a parking curb underneath the eves of the condo! How did that bird’s poop make a diagonal trajectory to land right on my face? Anyway, it rather spoiled the mood and once we all recovered I think we decided to stay inside the condo for lunch that day.

Now when we go to the beach, I am leary of anyone feeding the gulls and I stay as far away as possible. Yes, I got over it, but that doesn’t mean I ever want it to happen again. Imagine if you will, a stinky, slimy substance is running down the side of your face as your whole family sits and stares at you!! Rather embarrassing indeed, and although my hubby was kind enough to clean it off my face, I was so hurt by them laughing at me. I have to admit though, if the tables were turned, I’d probably have done the same. Damn seagulls! Can you imagine what it was like on the set of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds? Getting pooped on must have been a regular occurrence. I’ll have to research that someday. ūüėČ
