Watering, Weeding and Writing-How I Spent My Morning

Good morning everyone and how are you doing today?

Well, I started my morning literally “in the weeds” but that’s not a bad thing. I spent 30 minutes watering and weeding while it was relatively cool before the sun was up, and only made a little progress before I was sweating like a hog and slightly nauseous. See, I’m having a bit of trouble with my right eye (my contact eye) so I decided to see if I could wear my glasses for a day. Sadly that will be a no go if I’m to feel nauseated all day. Maybe little breaks without my contact will help but I realize that I just need to go see my eye doctor and get this straightened out.

My overgrown bed
A slight bit of progress

The turtles are not my thing, they were gifted to me from the previous homeowners (along with many, many other things). So, after a bit of hoeing around, lol, I came inside to the cool air and a nice cup of coffee.

I’m also happy to report that after signing on with Crowd Content, I have completed my first assignment for a client and am now waiting for an approval from the editor. I’m nervous because there are lots of rules you have to follow and certain infractions cause you to get strikes and so on, but I will learn how to work with clients and editors this way. What it is, is a place to get paid (albeit a tiny wage in the beginning) per word for your writing by doing small jobs for different clients. They may need product descriptions, blog posts, posts for their social media, etc. As you prove yourself and have successful jobs with no strikes, your pay increases per word. There is even the opportunity for bonuses! My first assignment was just a 20-60 word pd (product description) and yet I’m sure I did something wrong. We will see, I will keep you posted. Eventually, if I get the hang of this and move on to bigger projects, I can start writing those white papers that I took that other course for. That is a real juicy project with a real earning potential. In one way I feel I’m going backwards as long as I have been writing and now I apply for a job making pennies, yet at the same time,  I’m glad I waited until I learned to write daily, and quickly because all that will help me do many assignments per day eventually. The more you do the faster you climb the ladder and make more money.

Would any of you, as bloggers, be interested in how to make money this way? (I’m not getting anything in return for your interest, just trying to help I promise) If so, just check out Crowd Content by clicking the link and read the writer’s guide, rules and regulations. Give it a go and let me know how you get on! Have a great Thursday everyone and I’ll catch you later, on the patio.

Are Opossums a Welcome Visitor at Your House?

Mr opossum, patiently outwaiting my shorkies who had him frozen on the fence

This was the scene at my house Monday morning as I went outside to see what all the ruckus was about. The girls had “cornered” this opossum on my back fence and were going crazy trying to catch him. Again, shorkies are a terrier mix, they are vicious little hunters and won’t stop trying to catch and kill vermin until you make them. I’m also pretty sure that it was this guy or someone in his family they had on the ground a few nights before until I pulled them away and made them come in the house. All I saw without the benefit of my contact was a furry, gray ball, wedged between my wooden deck and the back wall of our house. The next morning I went to see if he was dead (I saw Brandy give him a good shake before I pulled her away) and he was gone! I guess he was “playing possom”

Now, before you freak out like I used to do before I was educated to the facts, let me tell you why opossums make good visitors.

  • Great for pest control- they eat snakes, insects, snails, slugs, eggs, mice, rats, fish, frogs, crayfish, and carrion.
  • They never stay long in one place
  • Only seen in the daylight when food is scarce
  • Not dangerous unless cornered
  • Clean and well groomed like a cat
  • Extremely rare for them to carry rabies

So whatever you may have heard, they are not bad to have around and may even help you get rid of rats (we do see less now by the way) but if you want to minimize the chances you will have them visit your house, do these things and they might just move on to the next neighbor:

  1. Secure under deck, house eaves and chimney access points with sturdy mesh wire
  2. Keep your pet’s food inside
  3. Secure compost piles (animal secure compost bins are available commercially
  4. Clean outdoor barbeque grills and grease catch cans
  5. Keep garbage cans tightly closed
  6. Don’t leave bird food out at night

It is not a good idea to feed them or any other wildlife, this may lead to your pets getting parasites they may not have previously come in contact with.  Although they are resistant to many animal diseases such as distemper, if you are scratched or bitten, it is best to clean the wound thoroughly and go see your doctor.

So they may not be the most handsome animal, but they are really nice to have around for a while. Don’t worry, they won’t attack your pets, chew your electric wires or dig up your flower bulbs. He will hang around as long as there is a food source and then he will move along.

What are your thoughts? Have you experienced a visit from one of these gentle animals? Let me know in the comments. Have a great Wednesday and I will see you later, I’ll keep on studying for now (for my job at Crowd Content) on the patio. 😉

How Are You The Most Comfortable?

Morning everyone, I’m coming to you straight from my office where I’m sitting atop my exercise ball, in my loosest pair of shorts, no bra yet, and my favorite tie-dye tank top. Flat yet bejeweled flip-flops adorn my feet, and I have not yet bothered with makeup. This is how I’m most comfortable, how about you?

I like to look decent when I leave the house, but at home, I like to be comfortable, especially when I’m writing. I would look rather silly all decked out just to sit in my office writing all day, wouldn’t I? No heels or platforms, no long pants or dresses-not while rolling around atop this ball anyway, lol.

Friday night we had a visit from Dave’s brother and his significant other, the guys planned on sitting by the pool enjoying beverages and catching up and Connie and I went inside so she could use me as a guinea pig to practice her nail jobs on.

Fingernails by Connie

I think she did a fantastic job, by the way, believe it or not, those nails match lots of clothes I own, like the shirt I’m currently wearing! Anyway, since I had been in the pool earlier, I would normally have stayed in my swimsuit since that is how I’m comfy in the summer months much of the time. However, it was freezing in the house, now that I was damp from swimming earlier and I just had to go change. What I changed into looked more suitable for the fall, sweat pants in a long short form, and a big floppy t-shirt normally used to sleep in that I inherited from Miss Stephanie.

(note the electric fly-swatter in the background of the picture. That is for also annihilating mosquitos!)

The method Connie used to paint my nails I’ve actually tried myself. I’ve been painting my own nails for 40 years and only get them done outside the house for a treat. She took a makeup sponge in the wedge shape, painted the 3 colors in stripes on it, then rolled the sponge across each nail. After that, she added all the decorations and finished with a gel clear coat so they all stay on. Unfortunately, my hands were in water much of the next day, what with all the food prep and dinner making the next day. I’m missing a couple of gems, but I can replace them later.

So how do you get comfy? I’d love to know, just leave me a comment or drop me an email. Til next time when I see you on the patio.

Flash Fiction Friday-Date Night

Back by popular demand, (ok it was just one special person) I have decided to bring back Flash Fiction Friday, temporarily anyway. 🙂 Without further ado, I give you- Date Night Originally, this was going to be a poem, but I’ve since slept, and therefore cannot remember it.

Kendal and Cindy had decided that their relationship was suffering from the proverbial rut, so over a matter of a few weeks, deemed a certain night of the week date night. It didn’t always fall on the same night, yet the last few times they went out seemed like it was always Thursday night. One thing they discovered was, Thursday is a busy night for eating out. If they got to a place early enough, they found themselves enjoying a drink and hors d’oeuvres rather quickly. If their timing was off, just by five or ten minutes it seemed, they might have a twenty-minute wait.

It was just such a night that they happened upon a little drama unfolding in the bar area of their favorite Mexican food restaurant, Abelitos. As they approached with their required pager block which would alert them when their table was ready, Cindy noticed an attractive lady dining on that night’s special, prime rib, alone at the bar. First off, Cindy thought it was very accommodating that the bar would serve patrons food, thereby reducing or removing that person’s wait for a table if that suited them of course. Secondly, what made this woman attractive was the shock of salt and pepper hair she had perfectly coiffed and done in a way that half was salt and the other half pepper. As soon as they had secured their beverages and a barstool, Kendal stole an opportunity to ask if the prime rib was any good. The lady looked at him conspiratorially and shook her head as if to say, “Don’t bother.”  That was all Cindy needed to see, she knew then that would not be her menu item of choice.

Soon, the pager went off and as it turned out, they were seated at a table right there close to the bar area. Kendal remarked that he could have just left Cindy there at the bar had he known. Once their orders were in, they happily sipped their beverages, a delicious frozen margarita with a sangria swirl for her and a Coronita for Kendal, and noshed on chips and three kinds of salsa. That was one of the things they liked about this place, it was a bit more upscale than the places they frequented on the regular. Normally, they were lucky to get a basket of stale chips and one type of salsa that was refilled whenever the waiter got good and ready to. Not this place though, their waiter was working so hard he was literally sweating. After a bit, they got the food they ordered and while savoring the delightful dishes that had been prepared for them, Cindy noticed a stranger sit down next to Miss Salt and Pepper. A conversation ensued between the two and Kendal said to Cindy it appeared she might be “trolling” for a date. Cindy being the diplomat she was said she didn’t think that was the case at all, she was probably just being polite and making conversation with the guy. She knew that had been the story countless times before she was ever married, and a few times since.

Cindy and her man had been married for over thirty years and they were still the best of friends. Still, sometimes they got so caught up with work drama, family crisis’s and day to day life, they forgot what it was like to have romance and excitement in their relationship. Thus the need to spice things up a bit and get off the couch once a week and enjoy free and easy time with each other. Cindy felt happy and lucky that Kendal loved her enough to make the effort. His desire was for them to grow old and wrinkly together, so they better at least enjoy the ride.

As they ate and drank, Cindy focused on her meal and her own date and lost sight of what took place at the bar until Miss Salt and Pepper got up to leave. Since they had engaged in a few friendly words at the bar, she must have felt like they were privy to her situation because as she turned to go, she looked directly at Cindy and gave her a wink before exiting the bar area. Cindy looked around but could not find the gentleman she had been talking to, so she decided they had hit it off and therefore were rendezvousing somewhere else together. Maybe he saw that she was enjoying a glass of white wine and asked her to join him for another. Whatever it was, she liked to fantasize that he was a perfect gentleman and only wanted to provide the lady some company for the evening. Not everything had to have some ugly connotation attached to it, she surmised. She looked at Kendal then and said, “Looks like Miss Salt and Pepper may have found love everlasting.” He just winked at her and said, “That’s my little romantic, always the dreamer.” “I’m no dreamer,” she replied, “I wasn’t dreaming when I found you!” It must have been the tequila for then she could have sworn she saw his eyes tear up. Guess he was more of a romantic than she gave him credit for. Even after thirty years, they could still surprise each other. This date night thing might just be what the doctor ordered!

What's With This Weird Weather?

It’s August in Texas, the rain has been coming down since sometime before the sun came up and the temperature is 72 degrees currently. What the what??? This is NOT our typical summer day, in fact, I can’t remember a time when it was cool and rainy on the second day of August, however, I’m sure there’s a weatherman out there who would dispute my sketchy memory.

I took a pic out in the backyard and it looks more like a fall day than the dog days of summer, but hey, I’ll take it! I’m sure we will be back to sweltering soon.

A gloomy but cooler day

Yesterday I took yet another course, this one from Udemy since it was an offer I couldn’t refuse, $10 for a course on how to write White Papers. (Normally $90) Now, I don’t know about you guys that are writers, but I’m not crazy about the prospect of crafting an 8-10 White Paper, especially if it’s a technical one, but then I read how much you can make and I decided…ok!

The cool thing is, they are different than any other job a copywriter does in that you get to become an “expert” on a subject you know nothing about sometimes. Therefore, they are the most interesting of all our projects. Yesterday, for the exercise the course asks you to do, I had to do research on how companies profit by the use of mini-videos. I learned a lot but realized I knew a lot too, due to the rabid popularity of U-Tube and Instagram videos, not to mention the crazy 6-minute “vine” videos you sometimes see on Facebook. Business   owners are realizing the huge potential of marketing this way, according to studies, and that was what my project was about.

I have not yet completed it because I am waiting for feedback on a question I asked the instructer. Unfortunately, my favorite teacher at Udemy passed away, you still get the course delivered by him since it was previously recorded, but now his mentor answers your questions. His name was Len Smith and he had this wonderful English accent and such a unique way of teaching, I will miss him dearly. That was my third course on a copywriting subject that I’ve taken with him as the instructer.

The next thing I did was to join Crowd Content and apply for some jobs writing and editing. I sent off my first submissions and now I have to wait until they are approved by the staff. Say a prayer please that I am accepted, then I can start bringing in a little bit of income for my writing. Thank you ahead of time!

Well, I’m off to take my Dad for his check-up with his cardiologist, following that brief hospital stay a few weeks ago. I’m sure he is fit as a fiddle now, but he likes to hear it from the horse’s mouth. I will keep you all updated, if you have any questions about anything I’ve talked about here, let me know in the comments.
