Morning everyone, I have a question for you on this beautiful Friday morning. Why do you or do you not shop your local farmer’s market? Do you like the availability of fresh produce for a decent price? I do.
What about beautiful plants that are in season? I certainly do! Right now at my local farmer’s market, there are so many plants I want, I’ll need to plan a specific budget for them all! I need to fill up beds, pots and hanging baskets to create the space I want to have come summertime.
What about all the wonderful “extras” most farmer’s markets have? Everything from freshly canned salsa to boiled peanuts to local raw honey, our farmer’s markets have all that and more, usually at discounted prices from the local grocery store. I just discovered last Friday at my local farmer’s market that they sell Talavera pottery, which my sister-in-law is a huge collector of.
According to this article on Wikipedia, “Authentic Talavera pottery only comes from the city of Puebla because of the natural clay found there and the tradition of production which goes back to the 16th century.” Today, it can be found all over with significant collections in Puebla, Mexico City and New York City.
I wonder if that means what we buy here is a knock off or the real deal. The prices are definitely not cheap, and the pottery is very desirable. I would like to start a collection of my own, as nowadays, they make pieces that look like they would fit into a beach décor very easily.
Back to the produce though, I would venture to guess that depending on what you are shopping for, you can get more for your money at the farmer’s market when it comes to fresh veggies and fruit. I plan on making another trip today for items that will enhance my Ketogenic diet.
I will price the berries and veggies I happen to choose and report back. Admittedly, I’m going for more plants too…as soon as I check my bank account. 🙂
Actually, I’m back to report what I bought which was strawberries, grape tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, a purple onion and a cucumber totaling $7.61. I’ll have to do a price comparison later at my local Walmart market.
I also got 3 elephant ears for $10, a couple of fancy leaf Caladium and a foxtail fern which was around $22. I was pressed for time or I would have bought myself a new pot in some of that Talavera. Tomorrow is another day! Ciao, and have a great weekend!
