How to Prep Berries Before Freezing For Smoothies

How and why should you prep fruit before freezing to make smoothies and/or desserts? Because fruit and berries from the grocery store may not have been properly washed, plus who knows how long it might have been on the shelf.

Prep is easy and takes only minutes to do, it prevents your berries from spoiling and freezing maintains them for weeks.

The first step is to get a bowl of cold water and add about a 1/4 cup of white vinegar. This will kill any mold spores and other germs that may be on the fruit. Let the fruit sit in the solution for 20 minutes and then strain and rinse.

Next, line a cookie sheet with wax or freezer paper and arrange your berries in a single layer for freezing. Remove tops from strawberries and stems from blueberries. Freeze for an hour or so and transfer to quart sized freezer bag.

This step keeps your berries separated so the don’t freeze in clumps and makes them easier to work with. Now your berries are ready for recipes!

Great smoothie recipes are everywhere, from Pinterest to personal websites. I like simplicity and speed, so I opt for the easy-to-toss-together varieties!

Just this morning I made myself a quick strawberry smoothie because I am feeling under the weather and have not much of an appetite.

All I needed was a handful of frozen strawberries, a 1/3 cup of heavy whipping cream, a 1/2 cup of almond milk, and 1T of MCT or coconut oil.

Imagine smoothie with no banana, Pineapple, or oranges next to it. 🙂

A few ice cubes, some sweetener, and a dash of cinnamon later and I had whipped up a delicious, nutricious, low-carb, keto smoothie!!

Of course, you could add anything you like into your smoothie, as long as it won’t add to the carb count and/or ups the fat content. I added about a tsp of chia seeds thinking they would give me energy, but I just feel so rotten, nothing really helped.

I’m sure it’s allergies or an upper respiratory infection, strawberries will help add some vitamin C!! I got my recipe from the KetoDietApp, a great place for all kinds of keto recipes.

It was actually from NXT Modern website which compiled several smoothie recipes from other websites together in one post. Check it out here.

Alternatively, you could make a smoothie bowl like I did back in April. Start with a basic chia pudding, add frozen fruit, nuts, and coconut flakes and BOOM! Easy, delicious breakfast bowl that is low carb, keto, and high fiber.

Curious About Day One on Pruvit Sample?

Hi folks, I know I promised to keep you posted on my results after drinking my first sample of Keto//os by Pruvit.

Let me just start by saying WOW!! My energy is off the charts! I tried the raspberry Lemonade flavor, 1/2 a pkt this morning and then the other half this afternoon around 3pm. Both times I felt like I was shot out of a canon, then after a little while I levelled off a little.

I had a good breakfast and have not wanted anything to eat except a small snack, yet I had a fat bomb a little bit after that, just to make sure I was incorporating enough fat into my diet for the day.

I had an egg scramble with some cheddar cheese and heavy cream, half an avocado, and some salami with melted cheddar cheese. My snack was a turkey stick from Old Wisconsin.

1 carb per serving

My snack was not what keto purists would approve of, but I only had half a lunch pack size bag, so I think I’m fine. They are called Nice brand Organic White Cheddar puffs, and a whole bag is only 10 carbs, so I had 5 carbs.

The samples I got from Pruvit are 45 calories each, 5 carbs, for the NAT drink, which is what I split in half until my body gets used to exogenous ketones. I also forgot to test my urine, but I will do that shortly.

The drink was delicious and I had no problem consuming it within the 15 minute window that they recommend. Who is “they?” The coaches of course. Melissa and Shelley are very supportive and answer all my questions quickly.

Tomorrow I will try either the Heart Tart (tastes like a sweet tart they say) or the Lime Time. These samples have about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee but maybe the additional B Vitamins just have me going like gangbusters!

I can’t wait to get some people on my team that are interested in either losing a few pounds, becoming more fit, or just wanting an incredible energy boost! This stuff really works and tastes good to boot! Huzzah!

Oh, and I almost forgot, I had a sample of the Crème powder for my coffee too…delicious! No butter needed, it has MCT oil powder right in the mix! Kept me full and satisfied all day.

Let me know who has questions and I will get you some links for more information, or you can call Melissa directly and she will help you understand what it’s all about. My goal is to enhance my ketogenic lifestyle and drop a few unwanted pounds in the process.

The fact that I already follow a keto diet 80% of the time gives me a head start, for sure, but I heard it works without all those restrictions as well. If you are a generally active person, you should see results regardless.

One more time, here is Melissa’s direct number if you want any more information about these wonderful products! 586-822-8042

What Are Exogenous Ketones?

To understand the difference between exogenous and endogenous ketones is to look at the prefix of each word.

Endo-means from inside, where Exo means from outside. So…endogenous ketones are produced when we go without food for a while, causing our insulin levels to drop, turning our bodies into a fat-burning machine as our ketones rise.

Exogenous ketones on the other hand, are introduced from the outside in the form of a supplement, such as Keto/os, or some type of pill meant to throw you into a state of ketosis.

Where it gets confusing is that eating a ketogenic diet does the same thing. reducing carbs, eating moderate protein and high fat will cause your body to burn it’s own fat, instead of sugar (like it has for our entire lives) thus putting us in a natural state of ketosis.

So why take a exogenous ketone supplement? Well, say your weight loss has stalled, or you are just getting on the keto bandwagon and you need a kickstart of sorts. Exogenous ketones will get you into that state within one hour!!

Otherwise known as ketone esters or ketone salts, exogenous ketones may also help with people experiencing “keto flu” as they transition from a high to low carb diet.

They might also help with symptoms that are debilitating as they relate to hyperinsulinemia, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and epilepsy.

You must know your own metabolic state, however, before embarking on such a diet or adding in something like exogenous ketones. People with high blood glucose levels typically do not metabolize carbohydrates well.

Going without food for these folks is hard because their endogenous ketones are slower to kick in, they feel tired and hungry because their insulin levels are so high and therefore they most likely will eat sooner and not stop until they feel good again.

Folks who are sensitive to insulin may be able to go longer without eating, so a keto diet may help them feel full, keep their glucose levels normal, and insulin under control.

I fall into the second category. Sometimes I don’t even know I’m hungry until I start eating. I don’t crave carbs or sugar anymore, and I have great energy all day long. So why am I telling you all this?

My samples of therapeutic ketones I will start tomorrow

I am considering a new supplement from a company called Pruvit, in the form of a drink you mix up and consume twice a day. My weight has increased in the last few months because I fell off the wagon a few times, so I need a jumpstart to kick me back into ketosis.

(clicking the link will take you to their website and other products)

Besides that, the exciting news for me is that due to my lack of exercise because of my knee, adding exogenous ketones to my already 80/20 keto diet should raise my energy levels and make me want to move more, which should in turn help me lose weight.

The other thing is, if I continue to eat a mostly low-carb, moderate protein, high fat diet in addition to the exogenous ketones, it won’t matter if I need a cheat day…supposedly it continues to keep you in ketosis regardless! That means in a sense that I can “have my cake and eat it too.”

I will keep you all posted and if anyone else wants some information on Pruvit and what their supplements can do for you, here is the link and maybe we can try this thing together and compare notes!!

One of the pioneers of this type of supplement, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino says using exogenous ketones is in essence a hack for getting your body’s own biochemistry to optimize your metabolism to reach your full potential.

“Ketone supplementation can be used to bio-hack the metabolism for increased energy, power, and endurance.” Dr. Dominic D’Agostino

This is great news for athletes and the fitness minded. For little old me however, I’m just looking to have better mental focus, drop a few pounds, and tone my body up for bathing suit season. 🙂

Is it safe to stay on an exogenous ketone supplement?

Here’s a great article that explains it better than I could by Dr Stephanie Estima on Medium.

This may be the answer to my prayers as well as others, and I’m sure that if I have good results, I’ll want to shout it to the mountain tops. If you want to join me on my journey, or even if you want to sit back and watch me do it, I welcome all your questions, and hope you will support me in my efforts to becoming a better me!
