Why I Joined The Keto Challenge

Hey guys, guess what starts today? The 60-day Keto Challenge, put on by Martina Slajerova from Keto Diet. You all should get in on this because not only is it a good way to jump start your weight loss plan, you could also win some awesome prizes!

The prizes include her brand new cookbook and an iPhone 8!

I joined for many reasons:

a) get back to tracking my food, making it easier to stay in ketosis, therefore dropping those last stubborn pounds (gotta get bathing suit ready)😉😊

b) possibly cure or at least maintain my PKD

c) free tools and recipes/meal plans

d) the chance to win prizes!

e) accountability with exercising

You will be asked to provide a before pic but you can take one in your bathing suit, shorts and a tank top or whatever you have that you don’t mind sharing with the public. At the end of the challenge, you will take a pic in the same outfit to show your results! Good luck!

Am I Crazy for Keto?

Hi everyone, how’s it going on this chilly Tuesday morning?

I know, you guys are probably wondering what is going on that I would switch from my usual way of eating (Paleo) to something new (Keto), but that is what it is going to take to drop the 10-15 pounds I have gained over the last 6 months! Basically, I’m having to re-set by detoxing from all the sugar I’ve been (mostly drinking) consuming and the cheating that has gotten so out of hand.

I have been scouring the internet for instruction, recipes, and support groups and I’m happy to say, I found everything I needed to get going. I feel inspired! I know I can do it because I did it before when I first started with the paleo diet 2  and a half years ago. So I have the basics down, I know how to eat for good health, I just have to put my mind to it.

Getting away from sugar is like trying to kick heroin…not that I would know-I’m just saying, it’s HARD! Once you let the Devil in (I’ve written about this so many times), it is extremely hard to kick those cravings. My advice (for myself as well as others) is to keep your goals in the forefront of your mind.

  • Have something to look forward to, like new clothes or in my case another cruise!
  • Think of how healthy you will be when you drop the weight
  • Look forward to the possibility of reducing the need for medication (some people get off their blood pressure medication once they lose weight)

How Keto Differs From Paleo

The Paleo lifestyle is all about getting the gut healthy and eating quality foods that support digestive health. In turn, this helps some people lose weight, balances blood sugar, and is therapeutic for autoimmune conditions.

The Keto diet, however, is more about rapid weight loss but it also improves health conditions such as type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

They are similar in that the emphasis is on healthy fats, no grains, no legumes and no refined sugars.

The differences are that the Paleo diet is not exactly low carb, high-fat. Since starchy vegetables and natural sweeteners like honey, 100 % pure maple syrup, and coconut nectar are allowed, your body will continue burning glucose as energy unless you really restrict your carbs to a low enough percentage to enter ketosis. (around 5%)

On the Keto diet, you are not allowed many fruits at all (mostly berries) and no veggies like squash or sweet potatoes! (I’m gonna die) The focus is on lots of healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, and butter (I’ll stick to my Kerrygold). Full-fat dairy is also allowed on the Keto plan, (hello cream cheese :)), and less protein is encouraged. So where my old breakfast might have included an egg cup and half an orange with my bulletproof coffee, today I omitted the orange and added half an avocado. So really, I can be Paleo and enter ketosis (by eating a Keto diet) at the same time!

Egg cup (egg, shredded cheese, broccoli, tomato, diced ham, spices) + 1/2 avocado for the fat needed

This is all one needs to do:

  1. Don’t eat any dairy except grass-fed butter and/or ghee (and cream cheese for me :))
  2. Track your macros to stay within the range that will allow your body to enter ketosis
  3. Choose grass-fed or pasture raised animal products whenever possible (I never did that anyway, too expensive for me and my budget)
  4. Pick no-calorie all-natural sweeteners like Stevia

{I can even have the occasional adult beverage as long as I stick to Vodka (0 carbs) and zero calorie mixers. You have to be careful with that and not overdo it once your body adjusts to being in ketosis, some people report getting drunk faster and hangovers being worse. So take it slow and easy if you choose to drink.}

Personally, I will probably do Keto whole hog for at least three weeks and see how it affects my waistline before I go back to my (stricter version) Paleo lifestyle. My challenge will be adjusting my macros (around 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs) and eliminating the sugar. I joined a Keto challenge site (late so I can’t win a prize but that’s ok) so follow my progress on Instagram as I post pictures. I also started pinning a bunch of Keto recipes on my Pinterest board (I stupidly removed all my Paleo pins, ugh!) so you can find some there if you are interested.

I’m going to go ahead and wish you and myself luck and tell you my weight-loss goal so you can help keep me accountable. I want to get back down to 105-100 lbs and maintain a size 2. That is where I feel the most comfortable since I am only 4′ 9″ any extra weight really shows on me. As of this morning,  I weighed in at 115lbs.

One other point, I (you) will have to purchase some Ketosticks so I can tell when my body gets in (and stays) in ketosis. I looked and they cost around $10.  More study will need to be done before I understand how often to check my urine, how to plan the perfect meals, etc. but I will find out the answers so I can  keep yall informed. 🙂

Cee's Share Your World, ( I Too Am Late!!)

Well, Suze isn’t the only late bloomer in the bunch, but when I read her answers today over at her blog (Obsolete Childhood),  I just had to get in on the fun.

I’m just gonna dive right in with no preamble, cause some days, that’s  just how I roll and let me tell ya, it’s been “one of those days”!

Have you ever been pulled over by a cop? Yes, a couple of times, one for a “California stop” and once for speeding and let me just say, none were as gorgeous as the one that stopped Suze!!

What have you always wanted? Did you get it? One of the things I always wanted was a muscle car, and thanks to my fabulous husband, I got it. It was a Camaro, burnt orange and I miss it to this day, even though I’m now driving a Challenger. Am I spoiled or what?

What is your perfect pizza? Well,  I don’t eat pizza anymore because I’m living the Paleo lifestyle, but when I did, it was pepperoni and black olive-every time! (Sometimes with extra cheese)

What inspired you this past week? The same thing that has inspired me every week since I met her, with her determination, compassion, and courage in the face of adversity, my friend Stephanie, who lives every day with a rare form of muscular dystrophy called FA, or Friedreich’s Ataxia. To see her bravely trying to walk in her gait trainer will make anyone admire her strength and tenacity, and her constant patience with me (even when I’m short on patience myself) is astounding. She is an amazing individual who I just adore and enjoy working for.

Ok, I’ll play along. I think this is maybe the first time I’ve done this, although I’ve read many of them before.

What’s your strongest sense? Just ask my kids and my husband…it’s my hearing. I can hear a flea fart on the moon, unfortunate because it is due to a particular ailment, not because I strengthened it somehow. If it weren’t for my ears, I would pick sight for sure.

Which of Snow White’s 7 dwarfs describes you best? (Doc, Happy, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Dopey?  Well, I would say Happy since that is how I feel most of the time, although my husband might describe me as Grumpy from time to time. 😂

If you could be one age for the rest of your life, what age would that be? Call me selfish, but I wanted to stay 21 forever. (See what I did there?) Anyway, I was young, pretty, popular, healthy and could party for days on end with no consequences. I had not had children yet, considering the job I’ve done with mine, maybe I would have rethought that if given the chance.

Optional Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?  That is so hard, because I’m grateful for so much, my health, my family, my part-time job…that I am not sick is a good one. I always look forward to the weekend, but this coming weekend we are FINALLY going to get my Dad’s windows replaced (weather permitting and the creek don’t rise!)

 

Day 123-31 Day Blog Challenge

Brrrr, baby, it’s cold outside! If it’s in the 30’s, it’s officially cold as far as this girl is concerned! We have so much to do to get ready for the cabinets coming on Monday and the weather is going to be sucky all through the weekend. Grrrr!

I should have planned my editorial calendar last night, instead, I relaxed because NaNoWriMo was finally over, did a little crocheting while watching tv, and just figured- something will come to me.

Enter Suze who told us about the 31 Day Blog challenge!! Now I have something to write about every day, something I can sink my teeth into!! Praise the Lord I saw her post and she gave me the inspiration to join in the fun. So without further ado, here is my first entry.

Alright, for those who are new here, my name is Kim, the proprietor of this here Blog. My last name is Smyth cause, well I just had to be different right? Couldn’t marry just any old S.m.i.t.h., I had to marry a S.m.y.t.h. I happened to get lucky and find the best of the three Smyth boys (in my humble opinion) who is also my soulmate. I have three sons, Sean (from a previous relationship), Joshua and Christopher. Chris and Sean are here local and Josh is in Ohio. Here local, btw, is Ft Worth Texas-actually a suburb called North Richland Hills.

I served four and a half years in the Army in the medical field. After I got out, I continued my career as a phlebotomist, most of which was at a cancer treatment center in Arlington. I miss my job but not the stress that came with it. I was very good at what I did and am proud of the years I did it. I now work as a caregiver part-time to a special lady some of you know as Stephanie. She blogs also over at Camp Craig Allen. The rest of my time goes to my writing and my family. My hunky hubby Dave and my two adorable shorkies are my immediate family, my Dad and Sean live five minutes away and I see them at least once a week. Chris lives in Ft Worth proper and I see him whenever he isn’t on call with his new job. I haven’t seen Josh in two years but talk to him often on the phone.

Josh and his girlfriend Taylor just had a new baby girl, Rayven Star, so I am a new grandmother. I was already one to two other granddaughters that I don’t get to see. Ok, this is getting to be way more than an introduction, so I’ll finish by saying I love writing, and helping people, so blogging seemed the natural thing to do! I hope I’m helping in some small way, even if it’s just providing entertainment. Anything I might have left out that you want to know? Comment below or shoot me an email.
