How I Met My Inspiration

Mornin everyone and have I got a treat for you!

This weekend (Friday night) I got to attend a conference by the essential oil and healthcare fitness guru himself…Dr. Axe!! My go-to guy when I talk about all these things on my blog, the guy I look to for recipes and info on essential oils…I actually got to meet!

The seminar was brilliant, he covered a few things I had never heard him mention before and then afterward, we had a Q&A session and pictures!!

Myself and Dr Axe at the seminar

He looks gigantic next to me, it’s probably the camera angle, then again, I’m super short!! 4’9″ to be exact!

This girl was in hog heaven, I recorded the whole speech, so I could refer to it here.

Dr Axe speaking to the crowd

He explained how the body has been treated since ancient times by how hot or cold, damp or dry it is, and how you don’t treat the symptoms of a disease, you find the source.  Like, when you have inflammation, that would be a symptom of it being hot or aggravated and something like Candida (yeast) would be too damp. Then the ancient doctors would treat the patient with foods like bone broth and herbal teas, or essential oils and tinctures.

Hippocrates said “All disease begins in the gut”

He talked about how emotions like fear and worry cause disease like cancer, which his mom had and conquered with chemo at first, and then when that didn’t work, she tried his way with ancient, Chinese medicine like bone broth, herbs, essential oils, and exercise. Today she is in remission and the best shape of her life!

He talked about how in Biblical times they healed the body with foods easy on the system, like bone broth and coconut oil, pears and blueberries, and herbal tea, because they are easy to digest. Changing the diet is the beginning of healing the leaky gut. He also explained how in our society we stay in a high-stress, flight or fight state and that we need to consume adaptogens like essential oils and herbs like holy basil and ashwagandha.

He explained so many things that it would be better for you to listen to the recording. The takeaway for me was how important it is to start eating bone broth to help strengthen my joints and give me a more youthful, wrinkle-free appearance. I need to get back to consuming turmeric and ginger to fight inflammation and improve digestion. I already use a lot of essential oils, yet there are so many more I had never heard of. Black seed, holy basil and milk thistle are some he mentioned several times. Bitter herbs fight dampness in the body and also detox the body of toxins from the food we eat and the environment we live in.

Nutrient-rich bone broth has many benefits

Lucky for us attending the conference, he had his line of essential oils and all of his bone broth products available for up to half off the regular price! So I got some coffee and grapefruit essential oils and did not want to wait in line for the bone broth protein, I got that Saturday night after our date at the Sunflower Shoppe, who sponsored the seminar. Thankfully, it was still half price so I got some chocolate flavored to make smoothies and baked goods with.

His line of products is called Ancient Nutrition and can be found online at Amazon, and at the Sunflower Shoppe which has three locations here in the metroplex or you can purchase online. I have no affiliation with any of these retailers or products, just trying to give some good info so it may help someone. 🙂 He also sells it at his own online store at DrAxe.com.

I have the recording if anyone wants to listen to it, I can email it to you, just ask me in the comments. I hope you try some or all of these products if for no other reason than to begin the healing process and reclaim that youthful glow. But remember, you can’t expect a miracle just using these products alone.

I hope you try some or all of these products if for no other reason than to begin the healing process and reclaim that youthful glow. But remember, you can’t expect a miracle just using these products alone. You have to start with a good attitude, a clean diet and at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Take a walk, swim, or ride a bike around the neighborhood. Do some research on essential oils and bone broth, read all the benefits and you and your doctor come up with a health plan that works for you. Have a great Monday and I’ll see ya later, on the patio! 🙂

Day 326-Wellness Wednesday-How Do You Use Cedarwood Essential Oil?

Did you know that cedar trees were mentioned in the Bible as a source of wisdom and protection? Neither did I, or I had forgotten. Anyway, I used some of my own this morning and its powerful aroma is still with me. I decided to explore more of the uses and benefits of this amazing essential oil. Let’s discover them together,  shall we?

The health benefits of cedarwood oil come from these major components, alpha-cedrene, beta-cedrene, cedrol, widdrol, thujopsene, and a bunch of sesquiterpenes…have you ever even heard of these before? Well, essential oils are made up of many chemical constituents that can be subdivided into two groups: hydrocarbons, which are made up of mostly terpenes (monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and diterpenes) and oxygenated compounds, which are mainly esters (aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, phenols,  and oxides). Whew! That is just some of the science that describes what make essential oils so darn beneficial to the body, yet we would be here all day if I described what each and every one of these things does. The best thing for you to do if you are interested in learning more about the science is to check out this website Abundant Health who break down each constituent and explain how they help clean toxins from the body and more. I can tell you that terpenes are responsible for removing toxins from the kidneys and liver and esters are antifungal, calming, and relaxing.

I noticed that after inhaling the pungent, woodsy scent this morning, my focus became sharper and I knew exactly what I wanted to talk about today. That just happens to be one of the many benefits of this EO which makes it great for people with ADD and other problems one might have with focus. Let me tell you some more benefits that Dr. Axe let me in on, and he would be happy to give you all a free book and grocery shopping list if you check his website out. Just click on his name and it will take you to his very informative website. Anyhoo, here goes:

  • cures fungal infections
  • promotes hair growth
  • repels bugs
  • cures acne
  • improves focus
  • is anti-inflammatory
  • relieves spasms
  • reduces coughs
  • cleans out toxins

…and so much more!

Now let me tell you some of the many uses for cedarwood essential oil:

By adding it to soap, lotion or your bath, cedarwood oil can cure the inflammation of the common skin disorder, eczema. It reduces the peeling of the skin and treats the infection with its anti-fungal properties.

Studies also show that by combining cedarwood with other essential oils like rosemary, lavender, and thyme and applying them to the scalp, they contribute to hair growth and slow the loss of hair. Well! I have three of those oils, so maybe I ought to give this a try. All you have to do is add a few drops of each to your shampoo or just massage it into your scalp and let it sit 30 minutes before rinsing it out. Shoot, it’s worth a shot and better than buying a wig, which I was just on the verge of doing!

Do you suffer from dry scalp? Then mix a couple of drops of cedarwood into a little coconut oil and massage into your scalp. Let it sit on your scalp for 30 minutes and shampoo out.

The same mixture can be applied to wounds as an antiseptic.

Taking a bath with 10 drops will help relieve arthritis and stiff joints by reducing inflammation. Inhaling the oil will work as well.

Cedarwood is also a natural deodorizer and it provides a comforting, reassuring wood-like scent. Believe it or not, it has the power to change your perspective and by diffusing it, you will have long lasting therapeutic effects. It is commonly used in perfumes to add a warm tone and it has been known to bring people together.

Using cedarwood in your massage oil will help tighten loose muscles and create a feeling of firmness and youth. It can also tighten the muscles of the digestive system and aid with issues like diarrhea. Just rub a few drops in your hands and massage your abs, arms, chest, and legs for a soothing and fresh sensation. What a versatile oil this is, right? There are so many other uses for this oil which is sometimes derived from waste wood chips which help people benefit from repurposed wood.

There are some side effects to discuss: this is too strong of an oil to be ingested, Additionally, pregnant women should not use it. Do not use in high concentrations or it can cause skin irritations. Ingestion can cause nausea, vomiting and extensive damage to the digestive system.

Now, I am not getting any kind of kickback or incentive to direct you to Dr. Axe but he has a great website, and if you visit right now and look up cedarwood oil, there are some DIY cologne and vapor rub recipes, along with all the other info I talked about here today. He has always been my go-to for excellent instruction on essential oil use, recipes and more.

Day 219-Wednesday's Medical Minute-What Causes Gas?

There are those who would say farts are funny. I would have to agree, depending on the circumstances. There are times though, when flatulence is a real problem, it may cause pain similar to a heart attack and it might be helpful to some of you to get to the root of your gas problems. Maybe you don’t realize that gas is a symptom sometimes of something more serious than eating Grandma’s cabbage, and there are ways to lessen your discomfort, if you just knew what to avoid.

Gas is caused by many factors including:

  1. Lactose Intolerance-The inability to fully digest sugar (lactose) in dairy products
  2. Food Intolerance- Digestive problems that occur after a certain food is eaten
  3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome- An intestinal disorder causing pain in the belly, gas, diarrhea, and constipation
  4. Celiac Disease- An immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye
  5. Gluten Sensitivity- Sensitivity to gluten

The symptoms of each factor are similar and can include; passing excessive amounts of gas, bloating, cramps, belching, discomfort, flatulence, fat in stool and urgent need to defecate.

Well some things just can’t be helped, like after eating some high fiber foods like fruits and veggies, or you may burp after accidentally swallowing gas while eating. But what if your symptoms are telling you there are more serious problems going on? Would you want to get to the bottom of it, maybe change your diet or check with a doctor?

If you experience excessive gas, it may also be a symptom of another health condition such as diverticulitis, IBS, Crohn’s disease, or a bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine from conditions such as diabetes. If you use artificial sweeteners, they may also be the culprit, many folks just can’t tolerate things like mannitol, and xylitol which are found in some sugar-free foods, gums and candies. I learned this the hard way, not knowing how mannitol affects you, I ate three pieces of a particular brand of sugar-free chocolate candy one time. Not pretty!

Ok, there are obvious ways to reduce the amount of gas your body produces, like stop eating the offending food, or drinking soda which has bubbles, but what if you aren’t sure the cause? If you experience persistent pain, you need to check with your doctor. He will schedule tests after an exam, like a blood or breath test and possibly specialized x-rays to determine the cause(s) of your excessive gas.

We all have and pass gas, and sometimes, it’s just funny. But when you can’t stop, or find yourself hurting no matter what you eat, or what otc medicine you try, please go get checked out and make sure something more serious isn’t going on.

Luckily, I have never been much of a milk drinker, when I started eating a more Paleo diet, I switched to almond and/or coconut milk. I notice if I slip or cheat, I get excessive gas. No ice cream for me I’m afraid, unless I make my own from coconut milk, bananas or cashews. If you check out my Pinterest board on Everything Paleo, you will find a delicious recipe for Coffee Cashew Ice Cream which I pinned from Do You Even Paleo. You might even find something else you like while you’re there, go check it out!

Plus, there are ways to minimize the gas your body creates on a normal basis;

  1. If you drink about 30 minutes before your meal, instead of with it, your body will digest the food better.
  2. If you ate and drank slowly, you would swallow less air, which means less gas.
  3. You could try taking a digestive enzyme like Beano to break down the sugar from beans and other vegetables.
  4. You could try activated charcoal, found in pill or liquid form, which helps reduce gas and creates firmer stools.
  5. You could try not drinking through a straw, and chewing gum (guilty on both counts) which may cause your stomach to fill with air. So does smoking. (not guilty, I vape)
  6. Avoid certain artificial sweeteners like sorbitol, and mannitol. Read the labels if you aren’t sure. I use Stevia which is natural.

I hope this has helped you identify some of the reasons you may have gas, simple or excessive, and that you go get yourself checked out if you are experiencing more serious symptoms like prolonged pain, bloating or frequent belching. Ask me any question on the subject and I’ll try to find you the answer. For me, eating natural healthy foods is going to produce it’s share but by not eating gluten-which I make it a point not to, I reduce my occurrence of stomach discomfort, diarrhea and constipation. If you want to know more about the Paleo lifestyle, check out Mark’s Daily Apple and  Dr Axe websites that explain the best ways to heal leaky gut and eat for optimal health. Enjoy your day and see ya tomorrow, on the patio!

What's the Best Essential Oil-Frankincense

This post is taken from my blog on Kimmy’s patio dated 8/15/16. It has been modified.

Frankincense is one of the oldest and most powerful of the essential oils, some claiming it even cures cancer! I use it for prevention, energy, clarity and concentration. It is the way I start most every day, a drop of this and one of lemon in my water, which I then sip on throughout the day, wakes me up and gives me a pep in my step.

Essential oils such as frankincense can be used in this way, inhaled straight from the bottle or diffused in a diffuser. It can also be used topically with a carrier oil such as almond, fractionated coconut, or jojoba and rubbed on age spots and scars to lighten them, or the forehead and neck to help with concentration and promote spiritual awareness. Essential oils pass through the skin making them transdermal, where they can then enter into the circulatory system and cells. This is what makes them so powerful and some compounds in essential oils have such small molecules, they can pass through the blood-brain barrier. In addition, healing through the olfactory system is what is known as aromatherapy and therefore simply diffusing certain essential oils can help speed up getting over a cold or prevent one in the first place. Frankincense is one such oil. It is one of the ancient oils the wise men brought to Jesus as a gift along with Myrrh.

The highest quality essential oils are Certified Therapeutic Pure Grade Essential oils and one should make sure they buy from trusted brands recommended by their doctor or aromatherapist. I’m not allowed to go into brands I like here, but honestly, I have tried several different brands I know to be trustworthy and I have my favorite among each of them.Because they are quality, they cost more, depending on the oil and which company makes them, but you can’t take chances with your health, so buy the best. I have personally had such good luck with mine, I come close to panic when I run out!

When I first started using them 2 or 3 years ago, I did so to improve my health and aid in my weight loss efforts. Frankincense and lemon are my magic bullets, I don’t want to be without them. More energy meant that I could increase my exercise, and they also provided added benefits like elevated mood, reduction of inflammation, and getting over my depression meant that I could wean myself off my anti-depressants, which I did with my doctor’s approval.

Speaking of doctors, Dr Axe has a great book that is my go-to for all things essential oils called The King’s Medicine Cabinet, which I borrowed some of the material presented here on this post. It is a free download and has an abundant amount of helpful information, reference charts and history on essential oils.

If you could have an oil with so many benefits in your arsenal, this would be my top choice.  No matter how you choose to use it, internally (upon approval from your doctor of course), topically, or with a diffuser, do try this wonderful powerhouse of an essential oil and let me know if you don’t enjoy an increase in energy, better mood, and heightened spiritual awareness. Pm me for brand names I recommend or stores where you can find good quality essential oils. Please educate yourself with Dr. Axe’s book and other resources I would be happy to suggest.
