How to Get Your Soak On-Benefits of Epsom Salt Baths

My back hurt so bad when I got up this morning, instead of reaching for a pain reliever, I made myself a nice, hot bath with Epsom salts and Helichrysum essential oil blend. Let’s talk about the benefits of and how to use Epsom salts.

Epsom salts have many uses

How Epsom Salts Work

Rumor has it that when you soak in a tub with some Epsom salts that the magnesium and sulfate enter your body through your skin and help with lots of ailments including:

  • arthritis
  • bruises & sprains
  • fibromyalgia
  • ingrown toenails
  • insomnia
  • psoriasis
  • sore muscles from working out
  • soreness from diarrhea during chemotherapy
  • sunburn pain & redness
  • tired, swollen feet

This may be the God’s honest truth or it may be an old wives tale, I know from experience, it works! My back is no longer hurting and that’s all I care about!

There are many brands out there today that have essential oils like peppermint or lavender already added to them, which is nice! Depending on your ailment or need, you can pick and choose.

I added Helichrysum blend because it smells good and has benefits of its own. The blend I use is a substitute blend from Hopewell that contains Clary Sage, Elemi, Roman Chamomile, Idaho Tansy, Birch, and Ylang Ylang.

There claims to be an alphabet of therapeutic uses for this blend, yet caution is to be taken for folks on blood thinners, pregnant women, or those with skin sensitivities. (although it’s never bothered me)

Click on the link above to find out more about this blend or make a purchase. (I get no compensation from Hopewell-just passing on the information)

How To Use Epsom Salts For Bath Soaks

As you are running a nice, warm-not hot-bath, pour in 1-2 cups of Epsom salts so they will dissolve. (Unless otherwise given permission by the manufacturer, do not add these salts to your hot tub, whirlpool, or other jet tubs).

Soak in the tub for at least 12 minutes, relax and let the salts do their work. Then bathe as usual and carefully get out. They will soften your skin and may make the tub a little slick, so be careful.

They will also remove excess oil from your hair, so as far as I know, it’s fine to wash your hair as you normally do. (if you do it in the tub like me) There are many other personal uses for these salts as well.

You can make a skin mask or a facial cleanser, they remove blackheads and exfoliate the skin. Soaking in Epsom salts will even remove a splinter! It reduces swelling, and volumizes hair as well.

Some people swear by these salts to cure gout, I recently got my brother a bag of Epsom salts that had activated charcoal infused in them, evidently this is a gout game changer! He was better that night!!

A Brief Word on Internal Use

Epsom salts have been used for hundreds of years as a safe laxative. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS when doing so. The package says to mix 1-2 tsp. in 1 cup of warm water to detox, then drink lots of extra water.

Do NOT do this more than once a day. That is all.

Other Uses

Soak a cloth in a cold water solution of 2T of Epsom salts and 1 Cup of water to treat mosquito bites, bee stings, and poison ivy.

Treat conjunctivitis and sties with a solution of warm water and Epsom salts by rinsing your face.

Remove burnt food from pots and pans, clean bathroom tiles, regenerate a car battery, or frost your windows for Christmas.

Dealing With The Deep Freeze

Morning everyone and how are you all handling the bitter temperatures? My solution was to stay inside and try to keep warm the best way I could!

And while we had no snow or ice to speak of, just frigid temps in the teens (this morning it was 13!) I could not get my hands and feet warm to save my life! This morning is a tiny bit better because I’m wearing sweatpants, socks and tennis shoes, my pajama top and a light sweater over that! The stupid heater is running non-stop yet won’t reach the temp of 71 to turn off…I think it’s running the fan!!!

I’m sorry to say that so far, the helichrysum blend is not stopping the ringing in my ears and the previous over-sensitivity to sound is back with a vengeance! I will keep on using it because one of the testimonials said it took as long as a month to work.

Today I will have to leave the relative warmth of the house to attend a Red Hat Society function…we are going to see Star Wars the Last Jedi and as usual, I’m dreaming of popcorn, fellowship, and fun! By that time the temperature will have reached 30 degrees (it is 12 now) so there’s that!

Not your Mama’s oatmeal

Yesterday I made one of my baked blueberry oatmeal dishes and I am about to sample it 😉  I used toasted pecans for this one.   Maybe that will warm me up! Sorry I have nothing in the giving-back-to-you-department this morning. 🙁   No sage advice, recipes, tips, or tricks. My brain is in story mode, trying to dream up a new one for Creative Nonfiction Magazine’s True Story issue. Yesterday I fine-tuned a story for a monthly challenge on Medium and now I have to get it submitted to their Slack community (so the community can read and review and make sure it’s worthy of publishing). It’s kind of cool and it will be my first one to have critiqued by other writers so…

I also got a story published this morning on one of the Medium pubs I contribute to, The Creative Cafe.   Did you know there is actually a name for the anger I feel when noises bother me? Yeah, check it out.

Saturday most of the family got together and went to Outback for dinner. It was nice and the kindly gentleman making balloon animals and such for the kiddos waiting in the long line made me a lovely balloon bouquet.

Flowers anyone?

I have no idea why he picked me, but I felt special. 😉

I also ran into an old co-worker there I had not seen in forever, that was nice but I didn’t have much time to reminisce, we got called to our table mid-conversation. 🙁

Well! The heater finally cut off- I cannot imagine what our electric bill is going to be!! Speaking of bills, we got the bill from the hospital yesterday…I thought Dave was gonna stroke out! It was ridiculous, and that was after insurance. Let me just say, it was in the triple digits!!!

Well, I’m done with the rant and I need to get to work finding work, lol. Nothing back from any of my proposals I sent to Upwork, I did hear back from an editor at a magazine I pitched to but I responded and she has not answered back yet. It all takes so much time in the writing world. You just have to be patient, diligent, and keep on truckin. Stay warm friends, peace out!

How It's Going

Morning everyone! I am really trying to have a good one because today makes one month exactly since my surgery…however, I got up this morning with that gaggy feeling in my throat again and I can only assume it’s because I overdid it at the computer yesterday. I worked hard at finding a potential client on Upwork, making sure my profile was tight and correct and then writing a proposal to try and get the contract with the client. Wish me luck!!

I’m also hanging out my shingle as an editor after taking another course on Udemy-they have been having a fantastic sale and you can get classes on just about anything right now as low as $10.99! this is also where I got started with learning copywriting (writing content for the web) a few years ago.

Anyone who follows me here and on Facebook needs to also be aware, if you got that stupid video attachment in a message from me, I did not send it, I was hacked and had to change my password, delete Messenger and re-install it!!! So sorry if it got on your computer-do not open it!

A few of my friends have checked in on me today and other than feeling weird today, my recovery has been going well, I was discharged from home PT yesterday and will be set up soon for outside PT, which will be nice because they do modalities like deep heat and massage (hopefully)!

I’m also happy to report the ringing in my ears is still there but seems somehow quieter if that makes any sense. I will continue to use the Helichrysum Oil Blend and see if it ends it completely. 🙂

I may even venture out to Sprouts or the Sunflower Shoppe today because I am completely out of Oregano essential oil and that simply will not do!! I rely on that oil especially,  during cold/flu season.  My brother has become such a believer in it he has been turning on all of his friends to this fantastic oil! I think he still uses it the not-so-tasty way by adding it to hot tea or something but I prefer to add a drop to my morning spoon of coconut oil that I then do my oil pulling routine with. It keeps the doctor away better than an apple a day.

I would use less than this lol

Have a  wonderful weekend everyone and try and stay warm, peace out from the patio! 😊
