Day 83-Free Days-Walk, Bake and Showtime

This morning was finally the day for the PKD Walk, put on by the good folks in Southlake and was relatively well attended.  Nothing compared to the walks to raise money and awareness for breast cancer, and not as organized, but I was glad to be a part of it. My hubby walked with me, after the balloon release, which was emotional for me. It makes me feel bad that I could have and should have been doing more to raise awareness and money since my mom was first diagnosed. So, I was thinking of her as we released our balloon and her name was on my back as we walked. Not that many were there to see it-my hubby and I were way out in front of the pack the whole way, our pace being much quicker than most. Thanks again to everyone who donated to my “team”, even if that team turned out to be my hubby and me. I also put in my own private donations, although I would have done that online as well, I would have been able to designate part for myself and part as a pledge in my Mom’s name. She passed away two years ago from the disease. As far as I know, I’m the only one of her five children to be diagnosed as well. Anyway, I hope next years Walk is bigger and better, and that the contributions for research keep pouring in.

Later in the day, he took our son Chris to play golf as part of his birthday present. While they were gone, Becky and I secretly baked him a kickass Banana Pudding birthday cake and, just in case he smelled something cooking when he arrived back home, I made some Paleo chocolate chip cookies so he wouldn’t get suspicious. I got the recipe from http://Www.ambitiouskitchen.com and they are delicious.

After all the activity in the kitchen, I subjected Becky to my taped recording of the Rocky Horror Picture Show remake-she wasn’t impressed. Then again, she is so young, she barely remembers the original. We had fun laughing at it anyway. See, I DO remember the original and I appreciated the music of both versions. The soundtrack and of course Tim Curry (the original Frank-n-Furter) made the whole movie. So I was happy to hear all the songs again, even if they weren’t exactly the same renditions as the first. I though the remade Riff Raff was awesome and Victoria Justice was very good as Janet.

It was kinda like the creators of this one forgot the whole point, originally, it was so outrageous for a man to be playing a transvestite with over the top makeup-just not the same with a female playing a transgender role.  Although I must say, the acting and singing would have been fine had you never seen the original and had it to compare to.

All in all it was a very good day, and the night is yet young! I can’t wait to see if Becky chickens out on performing her birthday “rap” for Chris’s birthday! Stay tuned, results will be in tomorrow, on the patio 😉

Day 48-Free Days-Quick Update

I thought tonight I would give everyone who’s been following along a quick update on our progress in the master bedroom. Today it was finally time to lay the floor. We went with a laminate wood, with a weathered look pattern. I personally love it and cannot wait to get our new furniture to complete the look. Turns out, my son had to work so Dave and I installed it ourselves, luckily, we’ve done it many times just us two.

First, we put down the moisture barrier. Luckily, our flooring came with the pad already attached and is very quiet.

Here is an example of the variation in the pattern.

Finally, a pic of the room at almost halfway finished.

I forgot to take a picture of the finished product before we put the old furniture back in, so you’ll just have to wait until we get the new stuff. Sorry, we were super tired and still had to go feed our fat and go furniture shopping. Dinner was great, shopping, not so much. The plan is for David to make our headboard and then we just have to buy the mattress and box springs (king this time), side tables and a dresser or chest of drawers.

What we want is kind of a white distressed or pickle-washed look, it may take awhile to find what we’re looking for. Wish us luck, and I’ll post another update when it’s all done. I’d rather you see it with the base installed and furniture in place than how it looks today. Hopefully, the wait won’t be too long. For now it’s time for a rest, on the patio.

Day 41- Free Days-Interesting Infestation & Remodel Update

So….yesterday, I opened the blinds in the office window to let my puppy look out and found this! It appears to be an infestation by carpenter ants that ate some material out of the window and then produced this green by-product. Talk about freaked out, I was like…what the heck is that!!!  So I took pics and then this morning I vacuumed up the mess. If we get an exterminater later (we need one) I can then show him the pics I took.

Meanwhile, in the master bedroom, my hubby was trying to finish up the trim paint and get the room ready for flooring. We shopped a couple of stores and I think we came up with a winner.

Soon, we will install the floors, build a custom headboard and get a new king sized mattress and box spring (right now we have a queen) and buy new bedroom furniture. We are going for the beachy cottage look. I can’t wait to show it all finished and decorated. We got the floor samples today…what do you think?

It may be hard to see since it’s sitting on the concrete floor. I will post an update if we choose this one after it is installed. I’m thinking once all the details are addressed, it will all come together and look great! Can’t wait to share the progression. My hubby is so handy and I’m blessed to have him and my son get this project rolling quickly! My job is to advise, consult and decorate, lol. He also got the doors ready for the tv cabinet in the living room. Soon, it will be ready for flooring as well. Moving right along!

Tomorrow, we plan to go buy the flooring but probably won’t install it until later this week. We will be otherwise occupied with church, grocery shopping and planning family dinner. We love hosting it and I can’t wait until all the remodeling is done and our kitchen will probably be the last (huge) project we do. Once finished, things will be so much easier to work around in and so much more roomy.

I hope you enjoy the updates and you feel free to comment or make suggestions-it’s never to late to make changes if necessary. Until tomorrow, I’ll be relaxing on the patio. 😉
