How to Recover From a “Keto Catastrophe”

Eating Out Can Lead to Disaster If You’re Not Careful

 

Take it from me! Yesterday I thought I was doing my dad and I a solid by trying Appleby’s again, my thought being ‘they can’t screw a salad up too bad, right?’ Instead, it was a catastrophe!

Well,  the “salad” was delicious, just not nutritious. It really goes by salad at the most basic of terms. It did have lettuce in it!

I chose Appleby’s Asian Salad with Grilled Chicken. Dad has recently been told by his doctor that he can no longer have bread, pasta, or cereal and that pretty much means he needs to eat more like me.

So we thought salad was a good choice for lunch, and it would have been had I checked the calories, fat, and carbs BEFORE ordering it!! It was unbelievable and tasted so delicious I asked the waitress to bring the menu back so I could see the calorie count.

Per salad, calories-1290! Total fat-85g Total carbs 84! Protein 50!

I felt worse for my dad being pre-diabetic than myself having chose this disastrous meal, I had no idea we were eating so much sugar. On the bright side, neither of us finished them and we drank water with lemon, so there’s that.  🙂

After talking (actually, I sent him an email) to a blogger I follow on Pinterest named Aaron, who is a certified nutritionist and expert in the Keto way of cooking, he runs the blog Fat For Weight Loss , he helped me relax by telling me to think of having a good “week” instead of a good “day” with food and that stressing out makes things worse.

He said “Keep calm and Keto on” and get right back on the Keto train today. We all make mistakes, it’s how you choose to proceed that makes a difference. So I did.

This morning (like yesterday) I started the day with my ACV tea, followed by a nice cup of chai tea instead of my usual bulletproof coffee to reduce my caloric intake today.

Helpful tips and tricks for recovery

His coaching and his recipes make it easy to stick with my program, yet I have a few of my own tricks and tips as well. I always drink ACV tea (apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and stevia mixed in a hot cup of water) when I’ve either:

  • gone off the calorie/fat/carb wagon
  • drank alcohol the night before

The reason this works for me is that the ingredients work together to metabolize glucose to prevent fat storage, aid in digestion and help the bowels eliminate waste. Lemon itself has so many benefits, detoxifying the liver is just one.

In addition, I sip on water all day with a drop of grapefruit essential oil and/or a drop of lemongrass essential oil.

These two oils aid in weight loss (and more) and the reason I prefer lemongrass is because the taste is les sour than plain lemon.  They also detoxify the body.

The Takeaway

So, the takeaway here is, always ask for the nutritional breakdown of your meal before you order when eating out. If the restaurant does not offer it, you can google most of them and get it there.

Cool Tool

Another helpful tool when eating out is to get this new app called HowUDish. This app tells you the places to eat within a specific distance from your home, based on the diet plan you are following.

You just plug in your profile details and the app does the rest! It also provides a breakdown of your macros per meal, and even offers tasty recipes.

I told them I would try out the app and report how well it worked as a little job on UpWork.  I also invited all of my Facebook friends to “like” the app as a favor to the developer.

I love their slogan, “Find the dish that’s fit for you!”

How It's Going

Morning everyone! I am really trying to have a good one because today makes one month exactly since my surgery…however, I got up this morning with that gaggy feeling in my throat again and I can only assume it’s because I overdid it at the computer yesterday. I worked hard at finding a potential client on Upwork, making sure my profile was tight and correct and then writing a proposal to try and get the contract with the client. Wish me luck!!

I’m also hanging out my shingle as an editor after taking another course on Udemy-they have been having a fantastic sale and you can get classes on just about anything right now as low as $10.99! this is also where I got started with learning copywriting (writing content for the web) a few years ago.

Anyone who follows me here and on Facebook needs to also be aware, if you got that stupid video attachment in a message from me, I did not send it, I was hacked and had to change my password, delete Messenger and re-install it!!! So sorry if it got on your computer-do not open it!

A few of my friends have checked in on me today and other than feeling weird today, my recovery has been going well, I was discharged from home PT yesterday and will be set up soon for outside PT, which will be nice because they do modalities like deep heat and massage (hopefully)!

I’m also happy to report the ringing in my ears is still there but seems somehow quieter if that makes any sense. I will continue to use the Helichrysum Oil Blend and see if it ends it completely. 🙂

I may even venture out to Sprouts or the Sunflower Shoppe today because I am completely out of Oregano essential oil and that simply will not do!! I rely on that oil especially,  during cold/flu season.  My brother has become such a believer in it he has been turning on all of his friends to this fantastic oil! I think he still uses it the not-so-tasty way by adding it to hot tea or something but I prefer to add a drop to my morning spoon of coconut oil that I then do my oil pulling routine with. It keeps the doctor away better than an apple a day.
